Raiders Ridge is about to have 85 more acres of public land attached to it thanks to an open space acquisition that was recommended by Durango’s Natural Lands Preservation Advisory Board, approved by the City Council, and then handed over to City Manager Ron LeBlanc to close on this December 10th.

Overlapping Raiders Ridge in Horse Gulch are two parcels that the City of Durango is scheduled to purchase from Jake Dalla for $510,000 dollars, according to Kevin Hall, Durango’s Assistant Community Development Director.

In addition to the $6,000 per-acre sale price for the first two parcels, Hall told the City Council that the same rate offering has been extended to the purchase of the remaining 103 acres adjacent to those for consideration in 2014.

Funding used by the City to purchase open space in Horse Gulch comes from the 2005 Parks, Open Space and Trails sales tax fund.

Raider’s Ridge has a technical rocky trail that runs along the top through the two parcels that the City is scheduled to purchase from Dalla.

Those visiting the area will remember it for its views of Durango and the SkyRidge subdivision to the Northwest, and epic views of Horse Gulch and the jagged Fruitland Outcrop to the south.

Let’s hope all goes well in next week’s closing.
