This culvert by Horse Gulch trail head functions as a dam for rain and flood debris

This culvert under a corner of the Horse Gulch trail head parking lot was completely overwhelmed by rocks, sticks and mud after a storm last Sunday morning. Photo by Jason Hotchkiss.

Some recently planted grass and two or three sapling trees installed by a contractor here were destroyed by flood waters at the City of Durango’s recently landscaped Horse Gulch trail head last Sunday.

This culvert under Horse Gulch Road is completely packed with dirt and rocks, serving no purpose for erosion control.

WOW. That is some damage, especially that running water below the meadow….
(On the bright side, at least the climb up from the parking lot to the meadow will be somewhat techy again :P)

Other than a few death cookies to kick out of the way and a little dirt to scrape into shape, it should be one of the most challenging climbs around.
*HUGE* jagged sandstone slabs were exposed in there, which could make for some techy challenges from above or below.
SO many lines to choose from!
