The City of Durango has got the ball rolling on a new flow trail at Chapman Hill that Alpine Bike Parks is going to begin building on Monday, June 8th.

Discussions between Becker, the City of Durango, and Trails 2000 acknowledged the existence of berms, drops, tabletops, doubles, water drainage features, and a trail for the younger kids in the design that Becker explained during a walk of the corridor last Wednesday.

From start to finish, the trail should be around 2,1oo feet long, of which, 1,000 feet has been cleared by city arborists in preparation for dirt work that’s going to be done with a track hoe and a few helping hands, said Durango’s Parks and Recreation Director Cathy Metz.

Metz said that the work is expected to take two and a half weeks, which the City paid $6,000 dollars for. Trails 2000 paid around $10,000, said Trails 2000’s Executive Director Mary Monroe Brown at a Natural Lands Board meeting on July 13, 2015.

Upon completion of the Chapman Hill Flow Trail and the new Medicine Trail reroute in Horse Gulch, the City parks staff will begin closing and reclaiming the unsanctioned Kitty Charmer Trail on public and privately-owned (Wyndam Resorts)  land in Horse Gulch, said Metz.

Anyone interested in volunteering to do fine-tuning work on the trail should be available to work during normal business hours and contact one of the following people:

  • Trails 2000’s Executive Director Mary Monroe Brown
  • Trails 2000’s New Trail Coordinator Dewayne Buratti
  • Sara Humphrey, Parks, Open Space and Trails Crew Leader for City of Durango
