City official: four reasons for excluding a new bike park at Cundiff Park from the 2016 budget
Four reasons that Durango’s Parks and Recreation Director Cathy Metz gave for excluding a new bike park at Cundiff Park from the 2016 proposed capital improvements budget at the October 2015 Natural Lands Board meeting:

This conceptual design for a bike park at Cundiff Park was created for the City of Durango by Alpine Bike Parks, a full-service design/build contractor.
- Access to the land is held through a revocable easement by Carol Wiley. “It really shouldn’t be revocable if we’re going to invest $2.5 million dollars on a park development project. So we probably need to make that a permanent easement,” said Metz.
- The City is planning to scope the public opinions of residents living at the Rivergate residential area, said Metz.
- Bike parks can be a lot of things, but what level of construction do we want? “Do we want an Olympic venue?,” asked Metz.
- While the Natural Surface Trails Evaluation on our open space was being discussed by the City, we heard loud and clear from the community that a bike park itself is not going to stop that kind of activity of building social trails, said Metz. “They want that recreational experience in the open space at diverse opportunities and locations. I think that we had originally hoped that a bike park or building trails at specific sites would help alleviate that,” said Metz. “There is a value to it, but it’s just not going to alleviate that problem, that we were hoping.”
